Father John Burns - In Residence
Fr. John was born in Long Island, NY on March 7, 1925. He served in the Navy from 1942-1946, then married the love of his life, Grace, February 14, 1947. As a witness to this love they went on to have and raise 12 children. Fr. John worked in the aerospace industry until 1981. He was ordained a Permanent Deacon on May 10th, 1979, for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Fr. John transferred to the Diocese of Fresno in May of 1981 to open up St. Stephen’s Mission in Big Pine. From November of 1986, Fr. John worked with Santa Rosa Parish in Lone Pine in addition to Saint Stephen’s until March 17, 1987, when he & Grace moved into the rectory in Lone Pine. Both assignments were without a resident priest. In 1998, a priest was assigned to Lone Pine and Fr. John went to work as a Deacon at Saint Ann’s Parish in Ridgecrest, CA.
His beloved Grace died May 15, 2002. Fr. John went on Sabbatical from May 2002 until January 13, 2003 at which time he answered “Yes,” to the “Call” of the priesthood. He automatically became a transitional Deacon and was ordained to the priesthood on April 12, 2003. He returned to Santa Rosa Parish as a priest until mid August, 2004 at which time he retired. For health reasons, Fr. John moved to Bakersfield and lives in residence, retired (but not really), at Christ the King Church.
